Year 5 - Spring One
Class: Year 5 Year: 2021 - 2022
In Spring One, Year 5 have gone back in time to study the major change in British History - World War Two. We immersed ourselves within the topic, looking at the impact of the Blitz, the role of women, and the evacuation of children.
In English, we studied a short motion clip, The Piano, and the novel, Carrie’s War. The children thoroughly enjoyed these topics, especially Carrie’s War. They showed a keen interest and understanding of the characters, considering the outcomes and emotions of each in great detail. In one particular lesson, we took our learning and role-played the ‘supreme court’ with Judge Frazer listening to the arguments from the prosecution and defence teams to make her final decision on the fate of Carrie.
Over the half term, we discovered the forces that have an effect on our daily lives. The children participated in many different experiments, testing theories of air resistance and friction and becoming mini scientists to find out more about the scientific influences within their natural environment.
The children used WW2 as their inspiration for art creating some wonderful firestorm pieces with buildings and fighter plane silhouettes. They used different techniques to bring their powerful creations to life.
