Achievement through Happy Learning

Our School Council

A school council provides a meaningful way in which pupils can voice their opinions and have their views taken into account in decisions that impact upon them. Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) -Respect for views of the child.

At Hatton Hill Primary School, our school council is a group of children that represents the views of all our pupils. It gives our children the opportunity to have their voices heard and be part of the whole school community. They help to makes decisions about school life and organise projects that support learning and development, such as organising charity events, projects or representing the school at outside events.

We value the opinions of our pupils and our school council gives pupils a forum to share these opinions with our school council teacher representative, Miss Gee, Headteacher and other members of staff.

Who are the School Council representatives?

A new school council is elected each year and is made up of 2 representatives from each class from Year 1 to Year 6. All school council representatives are democratically elected by their peers at the beginning of each academic year.

Our School Council says:

Rights are important because they are the things we need to live a safe and happy life.

We understand that everyone has rights. We must be respectful, responsible and value that we live in a society where are rights are valued.

Our Rights should be treasured.

Miss Gee - School Council (teacher representative)

The Pupil Council at Hatton Hill Primary School is democratically elected following our British values. Each September, new members are elected to represent their classes. They help to make decisions about how the school is run and take on projects that help learning and development. Pupil Council promotes pupil voice in a meaningful and purposeful way. It encourages children to take on leadership roles and make presentations back to their peers and staff.

School Council Project 2024-25

Our School Council says:

The School Council decided that we wanted to introduce the No Outsiders project to our school. We think the project is important because:

  • It will help make sure that everyone in our school feels included and important

  • It will teach us about diversity

  • It will remind us that difference is good and that everyone has Rights

  • We will learn through stories - we love stories!

We believe:

  • Everyone is different;

  • We like being different;

  • We are all equal in our differences;

  • We can get along even if we are different;

  • We live in the UK; our British Values support this and the law says this too.

Some of our special qualities or appearances are protected by law. We call these protected characteristics.

We presented a training session to our teachers introducing No Outsiders and explaining why we think it is important and perfect for our school. Below are some of the key slides from our presentation and a full copy can be found at the bottom of this page:

Our School Council says:

The School Council decided that we wanted to introduce the Wow! Walk to School Challenge project to our school. We think the project is important because:

  • it encourages children to travel to school in a healthy way by awarding badges for success

  • it will reduce pollution around our school

The project was a huge success and everyone loved the badges. We are excited that Living Streets is funding the project for Hatton hill for another year.
