Achievement through Happy Learning

World War II Day

Lesson: History

Class: Year 5 Year: 2022 - 2023

Year 5 had a fantastic time furthering their learning of WWII by taking part in a special day that focussed on childhood during World War 2. Dressed as evacuees, soldiers and land girls, children learned about what is was like to be evacuated and how food was rationed. They thought about what they would put in their suitcases if they had been evacuated to a safe part of the country or Wales. As a year group, they played traditional games such as marbles, hopscotch, skipping, jacks, coin toss, dominoes and paper pane making. In the afternoon, the children made an Anderson shelter and had an air raid after learning about the Blitz. To finish the day, the children filled had some “wartime” food including, jam sandwiches, traditional sweets, biscuits, ginger beer and dandelion and burdock! Year 5 had a excellent day!The ongoing events in the Ukraine have illustrated how important it is that each generation does not forget the horrors of the World Wars. Remembering the mistakes of the past has allowed nations to unite against the terrible events we have witnessed over the course of the last year.
